Residency Programme

Τhe G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation Research Residency Programme aims to bring together creative people in a collective learning experience.

The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation announces the second Research Residency Programme. The open call addresses Greek professionals from the field of visual arts and culture whose work is based on research, experimentation, and collaborations: visual artists, curators, activists, architects, placemakers, researchers, poets, writers, translators, and academics are all invited to submit their applications. The residency hosts 8-10 fellows, is fully funded, and will take place in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, from 14-23 October 2023.

The G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation is a non-profit cultural organization. Our mission is to support and promote contemporary art and culture and to aid lifelong learning and the transmission of knowledge to future generations. Driven by our mission, and always striving to respond to the challenges cultural professionals face at each given time, our goal with the launch of the residency programme in 2022 was to create a unique experience by fostering the conditions for artistic coexistence and movement.

The residency aspires to create a new platform for collective learning, discussion and experimentation. It is an intensive, week-long programme full of discussions, reflections, workshops, and on-site research. Access to multiple experiences – although often difficult in practice – is necessary for continuous development, therefore the residency aims to develop new networks of synergy and cooperation, and to bring together ambitious cultural professionals.

Inspired by a theme which dominates contemporary international bibliography, and permeates a lot of the Foundation’s recent activities and initiatives, we wished to create an opportunity for collective learning and to foster the creation of a hybrid group. The inaugural residency focused on the thematic of “Care: Economies of Eudaimonia”. Nine selected fellows and six invited lecturers discussed different notions of care and the absence of it. This year, the residency is part of a bigger, multifaceted, and international project, Care Ecologies, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme and co-organised by the Mamidakis Foundation, WHW, Idensitat, State of Concept Athens as well as the Centre for New Media and Feminist Public Practices.

During the residency, invited researchers, professors and practitioners will present workshops, triggering conversation and debate around main topics, including: care and curating, politics and ethics of care and consumerism, care and language, care and leadership. The goal is an alternative-experiential approach to each of the above topics, leading to a plethora of novel approaches. The residency will culminate in an electronic and printed publication, which will be presented in the Summer of 2024.

The application period for the 2023 Residency Programme is complete. Thank you to everyone who applied. All applicants will be notified via personal email regarding the outcome of their application.
