The artwork «Horizon» was created during the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), the theme of which was «A New Mediterranean Cultural Identity»

Life and nature play a central role in the work of artist Giorgos Gyparakis (born 1962). Balancing between reality and imagination, his sculpted organic forms affect almost the entirety of the viewer’s senses. In “Horizon,” four identical entangled bronze ribbons are each gazing towards a different cardinal point. The ribbons have been shaped around the artist’s body in such a way that Gyparakis can wear the sculpture by placing his body in the huge X that is formed. Thus, the artist becomes both the creator and the model for this piece, which does not function as a self-portrait but rather suggests at the artist’s autonomy and autarchy as a being and his attempt to reach beyond the horizon by breaking the laws of nature.
