Τheodoulos, The Phaestos Disk (1990)

The artwork «The Phaestos Disk» was created during the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), the theme of which was «A New Mediterranean Cultural Identity»

The creative practice of artist Theodoulos (born 1956) focuses on the juxtaposition of primitive and advanced materials for the creation of new concepts. With particular interest in the imprint of each era on the human memory, Theodoulos cultivates the levels of time in his work and considers that the form changes through time to survive. The “Phaestos Disk,” an archeological discovery of great importance, is transformed here and obtains new essence. The Disk captured the imagination of many archeologists and urged their attempts to decipher the written code on it. Unique within the artistic course of Theodoulos, this artwork seems like a primitive structure with shapely forms and shapes in geometric balance. However, the invisible interaction of the piece with the surrounding space and the reflection of the sky emit a tremendous energy. Thus, the installation becomes a mental passageway channeling cosmic energy to the viewers, the same way the ancient disk might have done.
