Since its establishment, the George and Aristea Mamidakis Foundation has been supporting contemporary art and culture by coordinating and realising initiatives that promote artistic creativity,
research and experimentation.
The legacy of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation dates back to 1988, when the 1st Art Symposium was organised at Minos Beach art hotel, inviting 5 speakers and 32 artists, including Lynda Benglis, Vlassis Caniaris, Carlo Ciarli, Anish Kapoor, Joseph Kosuth, Eleni Mylonas, Dennis Oppenheim, Katia Roka and Costas Tsoklis among others. It laid the foundations for what is today the Sculpture Garden, which hosts more than 50 site specific works
on permanent display.
The success and renown of the 1st Art Symposium led to its repetition two years later. The 2nd Symposium, the theme of which was “A New Mediterranean Identity” invited 16 artists and 6 speakers. The Sculpture Garden was enriched with works by renowned contemporary artists, such as: Andrea Fogli, George Gyparakis, Serhat Kiraz, Rena Papaspyrou and Costas Varotsos among others.
The establishment of the G. & A. Mamidakis Foundation coincides with the organisation of the 3rd Art Symposium, the theme of which was “Art in Politics.” Among the invited speakers was Helene Glykatzi-Ahrweiler. Among the 17 invited artists were: Magdalena Abakanowicz, Klara Borbas, Boris Despodov, Dimitris Dokatzis, Ingrid Fragantoni, Malgorzata Koscielak, Angelos Skourtis and Marios Spiliopoulos.
