Eliseo Mattiacci, Totem(1988)

The artwork «Totem» was created during the 1st Art Symposium (1988)

The work of artist Eliseo Mattiacci deals with the concept of human existence within the universe and the contact of man with the celestial bodies through visible and invisible forces. The cosmic energies, the planets and the magnetic fields were the core of its installations. “Totem” (1988) expresses these pursuits of Mattiacci. Besides the title, referring to Indian religious practices, the symbolic subtraction of the piece contains references of an archaic sense of masculinity and strength. The tranquility and strictness of the sculptural core are overturned by the dynamic of the disc which stands at the edge of its perimeter, ready to fall, reflecting the sunlight. Thus, the work’s energy is balance, exactly as happens with universal forces.
