The artwork «Red Man» was added to the Foundation’s collection in 2004
The sculptures, structures and installations of George Lappas (1950-2016) investigate the relationship of sculpture to its space and the communication with the viewer. “Red Man” (2004) belongs to the well-known human figures with the intense, characteristic red colour that Lappas focused on after the 90s. This particular one, as all of the artist’s anthropomorphic figures, overturns the traditional static quality of sculpture, as it is reminiscent simultaneously of a statue and a mechanical construction with many possibilities of transformation. The red colour is directly associated with human existence, being the colour of blood and therefore the essence of life, giving the work an existential and ontological character.
