Lucilla Catania, Cerchio (1990)

The artwork «Cerchio» was created during the 2nd Art Symposium (1990), the theme of which was «A New Mediterranean Cultural Identity»

Born in 1955, Catania is a rather unique artist. She ignored the ephemeral tendencies of art and chooses instead to create the contemporary in a traditional manner. She sculpts using a hammer and chisel, on stone, marble, wood and clay. Her piece “Cerchio” is based on simple forms which characterise the intensely subtractive identity of her work. The title, which translates as ‘circle,’ is indicative of the ancient concepts the piece encompasses, as well as a Spartan sparingness which captivates the imagination of both the artist and the viewer. A symbol of life and nature, the circle is to Catania the ultimate form which embodies the purity in art and life that the artist herself advocates.
